Sarracenia

I first started collecting Sarracenia shortly after I discovered that besides the Venus Flytrap, there were other carnivorous plants! My first Sarracenia was Flava var Maxima and I still have that original plant in my collection!

Sarracenia are efficient insect catchers and can fill their pitchers to the brim if prey is in abundance. Pitchers will catch a variety of winged and ground crawling insects that are attracted to the nectar on the lid and inside the throat of the hungry plant. Once engrossed in feeding on this bounty of nectar, the greedy 'intoxicated 'insects follow the sweet trail to a richer source of nectar deeper inside the column of plant, once there ‘one false move’ and the silly bug falls into the trap to be ingested.

Sarracenia come in a range of colour and sizes and when two species are crossed this results in fertile hybrids. This pairing process has led to a large number of wonderfully varied hybrids.
From low growing S purpurea with its red pitchers, to the Giant Brooks hybrid with pitchers reaching 1m tall
They certainly remind us of Triffids!*

The National Collection has over 200+ Sarracenia species and hybrids and we are constantly adding to the collection. The plant’s native habitat is diminishing due to climate change and development.
By holding a collection of these plants we can help conserve the cultivars that we already have in cultivation and should reintroduction be necessary in the future, we can provide a good genetic mix of plants from that location. The collection is open to the public to view by appointment only or by attending our open days.
