Sarracenia pitcher plants

The pitcher plants originate from U.S.A they come in a range of species and interesting hybrids

Some are fully hardy and are suitable for growing outdoors or in a cold green house.

The plant should be allowed to stand in ½ to 1 inch of water this should be rain or distilled water ideally.

Mains water tends to be to hard but is better than nothing occasionally

The plant should be grown in full sun during the summer months .

During the winter months of the year the pant will benefit from being allowed to go dormant so it can rest .

Watering at his time should be reduced so soil is kept just damp, and lighting should be reduced .

During autumn and winter months some of the pitchers will start to die back from the top these should be slowly cut away leaving green parts of the pitcher remaining as the pitcher turns completely brown carefully remove it from the rhizome to help prevent fungal infections.

When spring returns the plant will produce new growth flowering around March to May time.

Aphids can be a pest in spring so spray with a systemic insecticide to control them and to prevent them damaging young pitchers , the plant doesn’t need feeding and will catch its own food avidly catching insects during the summer months .

The plant can be repotted every two years this should be done before the plants start growing around January and February time.
