NCCPG National Collection Holders of 'Dionaea' - Venus Flytraps & 'Sarracenia' - The American Pitcher plants

National Collection of Dionaea

My first carnivorous plant, like many people, was a Venus Flytrap from a local garden centre. I was fascinated by this amazing plant, and from then on, I started to find out all I could about them which started me collecting them on a more professional level.

There is only one species of Venus Flytrap, however, there are a number of interesting variations in the plant's trap colour and size, as well as growth habit- there are even man-made mutations such as 'Wacky Traps' which have mutated and distorted themselves during tissue culture.

I decided I would like to develop my collection into a 'National Collection' so I contacted the NCCPG.
I was granted Full National Collection status in November 2006 and at present hold over ninety plant types within the collection.

Sadly, the Venus Flytrap's native habitat is diminishing, these include rural areas of North & South Carolina which are being fast-tracked for development & farming as well as being ravished by increasing poaching pressures and global climatic change.
I spoke to a contact of mine in the USA a while back, and he told me of a large area which was 'teeming' with Vft's,  sadly however, due to the lack of rainfall recently, the population there too has been decimated.

This is why it is important to have a sustainable 'bank' of these plants to help keep the different clones and cultivars in cultivation for future generations to come.
Proudly, in July 2009 I displayed my collection at Hampton Court with Plant Heritage and was awarded a Bronze Lindley medal.
